Where Do You Live While Your House Is Being Repaired?
Most displaced families have three realistic options: an extended-stay hotel, a furnished rental home, or staying with family. Which one makes sense depends almost entirely on how long the repairs will take.
For a repair measured in days, a hotel is fine. For anything measured in months — which describes most fire and serious water losses — a furnished home is usually the better answer for both you and your carrier.
Extended-stay hotel
Works when: repairs will take a few weeks or less, you're a small household, and you don't have pets.
Struggles when: you have children, pets, or a months-long timeline. A family sharing one or two hotel rooms for four months is a genuinely difficult way to live, and meal costs add up because there's no real kitchen.
Furnished rental home
Works when: the timeline is a month or longer, you have a family, or you want to keep kids in the same school zone.
What it looks like: a house in a normal neighborhood, furnished, with a kitchen, laundry, and room for your household. Most of our homes accept pets. Your kids keep their routine. You cook your own meals, which removes a large ALE expense category.
Cost: often comparable to or less than a hotel over a multi-month stay, once you account for multiple rooms and restaurant meals.
Staying with family
Works when: the timeline is short and the space genuinely fits.
Worth knowing: if you're not paying increased living expenses, there may be little for ALE to reimburse. Some policies allow a modest payment to the person hosting you. If you're considering this to save your carrier money, know that you're not obligated to — ALE exists to be used.
How to decide
Ask your contractor for a realistic repair timeline before you commit to anything. The most common mistake displaced families make is booking a hotel for what they're told is a two-week job, then still being there four months later.
If the honest estimate is longer than about a month, start looking at furnished homes immediately. Inventory is limited, and after a widespread event like a tornado, a hard freeze that bursts pipes across a whole neighborhood, or area flooding, it goes fast.
